It may be hard for some to pick a favorite feature of this dramatic three-floor, three-bed, and two-bath Salisbury condo, but the homeowner doesn’t hesitate. “The whole living area opens up to the ocean,” the homeowner says. “We see the ocean from every vantage point and it’s our favorite place to be.”
The homeowners have enjoyed their beachside bliss since moving to the 2,525 square-foot stunner shortly after the buildings were constructed in 1978. The whole complex—two buildings each with four units—once housed family. This unit’s past as a well-loved family home is crystal clear, from the traditional-yet-unfussy feel of the Honduran mahogany cabinetry in the kitchen, to the imported chandeliers throughout.
Imagine waking in the morning, pouring a cup of coffee in the adjoining kitchen, and breezing out to the open-concept living room, where the sea and sand seem just past your reach, thanks to the home’s direct beach access. Sunlight filters in through the abundant windows, playing along the hardwood floors and the crisp white walls with their vaulted ceilings. You might almost miss those sea views, considering how hard it is to tear your eyes away from the commanding two-story brick fireplace in the living room.
The fireplace comes with stories of its own. One of the homeowners worked with a local mason to craft the centerpiece of antique brick around 1980. The mason, a man in his 70s, would start each morning of construction with an ice-cold shot of brandy, “to get the heart going,” the homeowner adds with a laugh. Looking for a piece of local lore? The wood mantle is repurposed from a rollercoaster that once stood at Salisbury Beach. Just behind the fireplace, a ladder leads to a “secret” loft—swathed in sea views and with a second fireplace—that’s just waiting for new life as a cozy reading nook. A second loft with plenty of storage and an intricate wall of latticed woodwork is accessible by the custom spiral staircase. The main bedroom, with its adjoining bathroom, is also on the second floor.
Elsewhere, an airy feel abounds, from the extra-wide hallways to the spacious bedrooms. A sun porch invites you to enjoy the panoramas in the colder months, while two decks beckon for lazing in the sun. And if you can work up the courage to leave the sanctuary, the beach is just steps away.
