Real New England Weddings: Tim White & Scott MacKenzie

When Tim White and Scott MacKenzie happened upon each other at a house party in 2008, both had a sense of déjà vu. Perhaps that stemmed from the fact that they’d already met—at a bar the night before. “I bet you don’t remember my name,” Tim said, to which Scott replied: “Timothy Wallingford White.” A romance began to develop, and soon the two were living and working together. After two and a half years, Scott decided to propose to Tim while on vacation in Florida, arranging for a plane to fly by with a special message one morning. The only problem? They both ended up sleeping in. Luckily, Scott roused Tim just in time for the plane to pass over their heads with a banner that read, “Tim, will you marry me? I love you, Scott.” Tim, still groggy, said how nice it was that another couple with their names was getting engaged. “Then I looked at Scott and his puppy-dog eyes, and I felt this twinge that started in my heels and went all the way up my spine.”

Tim and Scott were married at the Lord Thompson Manor during a weekend-long celebration last June. Their raucous, no-holds-barred reception featured a vodka bar and a Cirque du Soleil-style acrobatic performance. “We wanted a little surprise around each curve,” Tim says. “It was magical,” Scott adds.

Knowing that Scott’s proposal to Tim involved a plane, the owner of Lord Thompson Manor presented them with a wooden jet on the morning of their ceremony.

Scott’s proposal inspired the wedding’s travel theme. Any checks left in the card box (a suitcase) went toward the couple’s honeymoon, a two-week Mediterranean cruise.

Tim hung more than 100 paper lanterns from the trees. The LED lights inside them glowed as the sun set after the ceremony.

Bottom left: Fresh fruit, on hand for snacking, also matched the wedding’s orange and blue color scheme. Right: Ryan Zoeller, a special-events designer at Winston Flowers, created the table-scapes. For the centerpieces, he placed manzanita branches in high vases and hung orange lilies from them, which reminded Tim and Scott of “funky Cirque du Soleil clowns.”

Tim and his a cappella group surprised Scott with a performance of Scott’s favorite song, “Stand By Me.” Tim and Scott hired acrobats to perform a balancing routine for guests after dinner.
