Dalai Lama to Boston Crowd: 'We Need an Education in Human Compassion'

Dalai Lama: ‘We Need an Education in Human Compassion.’ Sunday’s speech in Boston marked the first of a three-day event in Massachusetts, where he’s touring around and speaking on peace, the economy, the environment, government, and more. The trip is hosted by The Dalai Lama Center for Ethics and Transformative Values of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “Any movement starts with the individual, not from government or an organization,” he said to a crowd of about 2,500. “We are now in the 21st century, so we need education in human compassion. Not talking about heaven or hell, but how to build a happier community and a happier world.”  [AP]

Harvard Professor One of Two Americans to Win Nobel Economics Prize. Alvin Roth, a professor at Harvard University and Harvard Business School, and Lloyd Shapley, a professor emeritus at University of California Los Angeles, won the prize for their work studying various match-making processes, which has sparked a “flourishing field of research” and improved the performance of markets like health care and education. Roth, who is teaching a class at Stanford on Monday, says he doesn’t expect the honor to change things for him too much, except maybe his students. “… I imagine that they’ll be listening with renewed interest,’’ he told the AP . ‘‘I think this will make market design more visible to economists and people who can benefit from market design.’’  [AP]

He writes: “We live in a republic, of course, but until Watergate all presidents, whether Republican, Democratic, or Whig (remember them?) treated documents as if we were a monarchy.”  [Slate]
