Robert De Niro Joins the David O. Russell Film Project Shooting in Boston
We reported last month that Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale, Jennifer Lawrence, and more are in Boston shooting an untitled David O. Russell project (also called Abscam and American Bullshit) throughout the spring months (Miss Lawrence is possibly here through the summer). This week, Robert De Niro confirmed with Empire that he will be joining the cast as an additional character in the film. He will play “a fixer of sorts” in the story about a 1970s FBI sting.
Last year, De Niro starred in another David O. Russell film, the Oscar-winning Silver Linings Playbook, alongside Cooper and Lawrence, so the reunion is no surprise. De Niro, however, also has Boston city councilors up in arms over another one of his Boston projects. Pre-production is currently underway on his project for Showtime: a neo-Nazi series called The 4th Reich based in Southie.
While De Niro hasn’t shown up on set in Boston yet, the rest of the David O. Russell cast has been photographed in Boston looking really retro in costume. Bradley Cooper was pictured with tight ringlet curls, Jennifer Lawrence in a neck brace, Jeremy Renner looking like sad Elvis, and Christian Bale looking like somebody who ate Christian Bale.
OnLocationVacations.com has been keeping tabs on specific filming locations for Russell’s project around Massachusetts. The website has reported the following locations within the past three weeks:
1. In late March, the cast was shooting along Rt. 135 in Natick, and also in downtown Boston near the State House and Boston Common area. Just last week, they were reportedly shooting at the Wang Theatre.
2. On Monday, the cast was shooting at Anthony Pier 4 Cafe in Swampscott. On Tuesday, the crew was set up at the Clapp School’s tennis courts in Woburn for a shoot. And on Wednesday and Thursday, the cast was seen shooting on Millbury Street and Nick’s Bar and Grill in Worcester.
3. According to a recent casting call, the cast will continue to shoot in Worcester on Monday, April 15. Locals in the Greater Boston area have said the production company is contacting residents about scouting houses to use as filming locations.
