Watch: The Monuments Men Trailer, Starring George Clooney and Matt Damon
“In a race against time, a crew of art historians and museum curators unite to recover renowned works of art stolen by Nazis before Hitler destroys them.”
Sound familiar?
That’s the setup of The Monuments Men, an upcoming film starring George Clooney and Matt Damon and based on the book, The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History by Robert M. Edsel.
In the first trailer for the movie, set to premiere in December, we see Clooney and Damon meeting at a bar. The exchange goes down like this:
Clooney: I’m to put a team together and do our best to protect buildings, bridges, and art before the Nazis destroy everything.
Damon: How many men?
Clooney: Six.
Damon: Jesus!
Clooney: Well, with you, it’s seven.
Damon: That’s much better.
But you know what’s better than seven men? Eleven. Or, if you’re a fan of sequels, Twelve, or Thirteen. Preferably in the form of a group of handsome men robbing a Las Vegas casino under the direction of the most handsome one of all.
Not only is the trailer for The Monuments Men a reminder of Ocean’s Eleven, but the “So we get to shoot some Nazis” attitude is also reminiscent of Inglourious Basterds, which begs the real question here: Where the hell is Brad Pitt?
As with any Clooney production, even without Brad Pitt, Monuments does have quite the cast, including Cate Blanchett, Bill Murray, John Goodman, and Jean Dujardin (the French George Clooney) from The Artist.
An all-star lineup banding together to take down Hitler? Yeah, we’ll watch.
The Monuments Men premieres December 18.
