There Will Be ‘Pop-Up’ Performances By Blue Man Group and The Nutcracker at MBTA Stations
To kick-off the holiday season, some of the city’s most notable theatre acts will be popping up in MBTA stations around the system, surprising riders during the Friday commute with short performances on the platforms.
According to Mayor Tom Menino’s art administration, as part of the 10th anniversary of the Mayor’s Holiday Spectacular, live in-station performances will take place in impromptu fashion.
Starting promptly at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, November 22, eight MBTA stations—including Back Bay, South Station, Kenmore, Downtown Crossing, Government Center, North Station, and Porter Square—will transform into theatre space for the acts, who will put on 10-minute tributes to the holiday season.
At Downtown Crossing, riders can catch the Blue Man Group like never before, and get an up close view of their stage show. “Nothing sets the tone for your daily commute like the percussive beats of Blue Man Group,” according to a press release from the city.
Over at South Station, on the same level as the Commuter Rail trains, passengers can get a glimpse of the Urban Nutcracker. And at Government Center, those traveling the Green Line will be able to take in tunes by the Boston Pops.
Other performances include the American Repertory Theater’s “The Donkey Show,” the Christmas Revels singers, and dancers from José Mateo Ballet Theatre’s “The Nutcracker.”
ArtsBoston is producing the events, in collaboration with the Greater Boston Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the MBTA.
The mayor’s office wants those riding the T to share the experience with people above ground, who may opt to walk or drive, using the special hashtag #BostonHoliday on social media sites for the one-day event.
