American Hustle, Captain Phillips, and Lone Survivor Get Oscar Nods
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the nominees for this year’s Oscars today, and (surprise!) American Hustle received a long string of hat tips.
With 10 nominations, the movie—filmed partly in Boston—was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director (David O. Russell), Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor (Christian Bale), Best Actress (Amy Adams), Best Supporting Actor (Bradley Cooper), Best Supporting Actress (Jennifer Lawrence), Film Editing, Production Design, and of course Costume Design (Those pants! The deep-Vs!).
It would seem that American Hustle’s biggest competitor is Gravity, which also received 10 nominations (the most of any films this year). But if the Golden Globes were any indication, Gravity (mostly lauded this year for its unprecedented visual effects) probably won’t be much of a threat to its competition on the story front.
Of course, that’s not to say there isn’t stiff competition. Can Christian Bale, for example, defeat Leonardo DiCaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street? Chiwetel Ejiofor in 12 Years a Slave? Matthew McConaughey in Dallas Buyers Club, who just won the Golden Globe? We’ll have to see.
Also nominated for several Oscars is Captain Phillips, a drama depicting the 2009 Maersk Alabama hijacking by Somali pirates. Tom Hanks, who plays Massachusetts native Captain Richard Phillips, is not nominated for Best Actor in this one. I repeat, Tom Hanks is not nominated for Best Actor. And the world hasn’t ended. Amazing.
Captain Phillips is in the running for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Barkhad Abdi), Adapted Screenplay, Film Editing. Sound Editing, and Sound Mixing. Watch out Gravity, Captain Phillips is on your heels on the production front. Just kidding, space beats ocean.
Finally, recent release Lone Survivor, produced and starring Mark Wahlberg, is nominated for Sound Editing and Sound Mixing.
