Reports Say Matt Damon Will Return in Fifth Bourne Movie
We interrupt your regular programming to share that, according to reports from Deadline and the Hollywood Reporter, Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass are in talks with Universal about a fifth Bourne movie with Damon reprising his role as Jason Bourne.
Reports say Universal wants the reunion to happen so badly that they’ll push back a previously planned Bourne 5 installment with only the spinoff character Alex Cross to a later date in order to accommodate the return of Jason Bourne.
Damon starred as CIA assassin Jason Bourne in the first three films of the series—The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, and The Bourne Ultimatum—while Jeremy Renner starred as Alex Cross in the spinoff fourth film The Bourne Legacy.
Hard to imagine it’s been more than a decade since we first met Jason Bourne in 2002. We first find Damon’s broody character when the amnesia-suffering, jab-punching hero is pulled out of the Mediterranean with gunshot wounds in the back. While he can’t remember his name, he hasn’t forgotten his special set of skills, which he uses to figure out who he is and take down Treadstone and Blackbriar. Along the way, Bourne falls in love with Marie (Franka Potente) and has a complicated and a seemingly unnecessary relationship with Nicolette Parsons (Julia Stiles).
Yeah, it’s all coming back to you now isn’t it?
The fourth film, despite starring talented actors Renner and Rachel Weisz, received mixed reviews by audiences and critics. When the catchy, piercing, theme played at the end of The Bourne Legacy, some of us were only reminded how much we wished it was Bourne and Marie sailing off into the sunset instead of Cross and Marta.
If all works out, we’ll meet Bourne again in summer 2016.
