GG Allin’s Dress Is Up for Auction

Boston auction house calls it an 'unusually touching piece of history from the notorious punk rocker.'

GG Allin Wedding

GG Allin trafficked in vicious lyrics, noise, and spectacle. From inciting riots to jamming a banana up his butthole during a spoken word at New York University to hurling his own feces at audiences, the New England-bred punk was as raw as could be. In between the antics, he churned out a few legendary tracks that continue to fuel angst-ridden individuals to this day.

Now RR Auction of Boston is selling a softer but no less bizarre piece of Allin’s legacy—a floral-patterned dress he wore to his brother’s 1989 wedding at Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge.

According to a letter of authenticity from Allin’s brother, Merle, Allin was both the best man and the maid of honor on the big day. “He shaved half of his bearded face & wore makeup as well as wearing his leather jacket & the purple & gold dress,” the letter from Merle notes.

RR Auction adds that the dress was also “worn on stage by guitarist Chris Brokaw during the only live performance of the band GG Allin & The Aids Brigade at Cambridge’s Middle East Cafe on August 27, 1989.”

Allin died of an overdose in 1993. Earlier this year, RR Auction was selling an old copy of Allin’s resume, which touted his experience as a maintenance man at a nursing home in New Hampshire.

If you want to get in on the action, bids for the dress, which has “trivial stains” near the collar, must be placed by 6 p.m. on Nov. 19. Opening bids appear to start at $200.
