The list of nominations for the 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards was released on Thursday morning and a number of Boston-area stars and productions made the cut.

Despite being shutout of the Screen Actors Guild Awards, Matt Damon was able to score a Golden Globe nomination for best actor in a comedy or musical for his role in the sci-fi thriller The Martian. The Cambridge native will have some heavy competition in the category as he goes head-to-head with fellow Massachusetts-born actor and The Big Short star Steve Carell and Mark Ruffalo, who’s nominated for his work in the Boston-set flick Infinitely Polar Bear.

Spotlight, the film about the Boston Globe‘s investigation into the Catholic Church’s sex abuse scandal, also earned a slew of nominations, including best screenplay, best drama, as well as a best director nod for Tom McCarthy.

Surprisingly, Johnny Depp’s turn as Boston gangster Whitey Bulger in Black Mass did not earn a single nomination.

Rounding out the list is Medford native Uzo Aduba, who’s nominated for best supporting actress in a mini-series for her role on Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black. Berklee College of Music grad Charlie Puth’s song “See You Again,” which was featured in the latest Fast & Furious installment, is up for best original song.
