Spotlight Earns Six Oscar Nominations
Awards season is finally in full gear.
After some surprise winners at last weekend’s Golden Globes ceremony, Hollywood’s biggest stars will be going head-to-head once again as this year’s Academy Awards.
The nominations for the 2016 Oscars were announced on Thursday morning and Massachusetts native John Krasinski was on hand to help Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaac, and filmmakers Guillermo del Toro and Ang Lee present this year’s crop of nominees.
A number of local stars and productions were nominated this year including Spotlight, the film about the Boston Globe‘s investigation into the Catholic Church’s sex abuse scandal. The film was nominated in six categories, including best picture, best original screenplay, best film editing, and best director. Rachel McAdams also picked up a nod for best supporting actress while Mark Ruffalo was nominated for best supporting actor.
Boston-bred star Matt Damon had a good morning as well. He was nominated for best actor for his role in The Martian, which earned nods in several categories, including best picture and best adapted screenplay.
Burlington native Amy Poehler’s hit Pixar film Inside Out was nominated for best animated feature.
