Cheers was filled with boisterous cheers on Friday morning as the Today show taped a pre-Superbowl pep rally.
Host Al Roker riled up the crowd from inside the Boston bar while host Sheinelle Jones reported from a crowd of Falcons fans in Atlanta. In Faneuil Hall’s Cheers, Patriots devotees were decked out head to toe in Pats gear, which included that infamously creepy Tom Brady mask.
The show bounced back between rallies in Atlanta and Boston, highlighting each team’s superfans. Today show meteorologist and former WHDH meteorologist Dylan Dreyer made a live appearance during her maternity leave, introducing seven-week-old Calvin to the world from Boston. Marty Walsh also joined the show in Faneuil Hall, and was present while the Today show gifted Super Bowl 51 tickets to a pair of Boston College students.
What viewers didn’t see during the broadcast was the Pats’ fans off-screen cheering. Even when the cameras weren’t rolling, shouts of “Tom Brady!” and “Do your job!” spontaneously erupted from the crowd, eliciting a “Wowsers,” from Roker. Plus, the cheering had musical accompaniment—members of the New England End Zone Militia played the fife and drum. They were dressed in period garb along with actors from the Freedom Trail Foundation and the Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum.
“Now it’s time for me to do my job,” said Roker before rattling off the day’s forecasts. (A mention of a storm was met with shouts of “woo” from the crowd.)
