If you celebrate Christmas, the holiday season doesn’t feel real until the smell of a fresh evergreen graces your living room. Whether you’re in the market to buy a tree or you’re looking to chop your own down, here’s where to find your perfect Christmas tree in Boston right now.

Where to Cut Your Own Tree

Visit these farms for the more hands-on, traditional experience of cutting your own tree. You might have to drive a little ways outside the city, but nothing beats the satisfaction of bringing home a huge, sappy evergreen that you cut with your own hands.

Greenwood Tree Farm

This popular Billerica tree farm has extensive selections of both cut-your-own and pre-cut trees. Customers who come to cut their own trees will be treated to complimentary hot apple cider and samples of local honey, as well as all the help they need to get their tree loaded onto their car. Visitors to Greenwood’s farm stand will also find plenty of wreaths and decorations available for purchase.

96 Dudley Rd., Billerica, greenwoodtreefarm.com.

Smolak Farms

The cut-your-own Douglas and Fraser firs offered at Smolak Farms are always in high demand and tend to sell out early, so get ’em while you can. Smolak also sells a specialized tree stand known as the “Marriage Saver” that will keep your tree standing tall and stable all season long. The North Andover farm also hosts crafts and activities for kids while parents pick the perfect tree.

315 South Bradford St., North Andover, smolakfarms.com.

Vandervalk Farm

This Mendon tree farm and winery boasts over 10 acres full of Balsam and Fraser firs just waiting to be cut. The trees vary in size and range up to nine feet tall, so customers are bound to find one to fit their home. Vandervalk Farms also offers complimentary tree shaking, wrapping, and tying with the purchase of a tree, as well as free hot cider and cinnamon grahams for worn-out shoppers.

25 Lovell St., Mendon, vandervalkfarm.com.

Pakeen Farm

Pakeen Farm grows all of its cut-your-own trees itself, nurturing them on the farm for over eight years before they’re tall enough to sell. They offer several varieties, including Balsam Fir, Fraser Fir, Concolor Fir, Norway Spruce, and a small number of Blue Spruce trees. Their inventory is limited, so be sure to get there early in the season while trees last.

Maple Crest Farm

This West Newbury farm’s Christmas trees are just part of the attraction when you visit during the holidays. Maple Crest Farm also offers complimentary wagon rides, marshmallow roasting, hot chocolate, and Christmas ornament coloring in addition to the selection of Christmas trees grown right there on the farm. Maple Crest donates $5 of every tree purchase to a local education foundation of your choice, so you can feel good about supporting schools while selecting your specimen.
