Break out the “IT IS YOUR BIRTHDAY.” sign and tie some half-inflated balloons to toilet paper—Mindy Kaling turns 40 today!
While Kaling’s on-screen personas endured some pretty awful birthday celebrations (need I remind you of the time when Dr. Mindy Lahiri’s friends gifted her Microwave Cooking for One, a body pillow likeness of Chris Evans, and an elliptical?), Kaling’s real-life fete seems to be off to a strong start. Just check out this video that she posted to her Twitter and Instagram this morning:

However, the Cambridge native’s Monday milestone didn’t stay this low-key for long. This afternoon, Kaling tweeted some big news: In honor of her 40th year of life, Kaling plans to donate $40,000 to charity.
“I’m so grateful to have my wonderful, peaceful life w/my daughter Katherine,” the tweet reads. “How lucky am I to turn 40? I would love to express my gratitude by donating $1000 to 40 different charitable orgs that help others.”
To kick things off, Kaling donated $1000 to refugee and immigrant services nonprofit RAICES Texas. Fans have taken to Kaling’s social media accounts to offer suggestions of where the rest of her funds could go.
This isn’t the first time Kaling has used her birthday as a chance to be charitable. In 2015, she posted a similar request to celebrate turning 36:
For my birthday I’d like to go shopping. What are your favorite charitable organizations and why? Tweet me link & I will give! RT my faves!

As she did in 2015, Kaling is retweeting her favorite suggestions. So far, she has pledged to donate to the Down Syndrome Association of Wisconsin, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, Charity Water, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, The Nature Conservancy, End Rape on Campus, and the Lupus Foundation of America.
