Bono and Sir Richard Branson Join Matt Damon’s ‘Toilet Strike’ Movement
More big-name celebrities are risking backing up their bowels in an effort to make a point about the crappy water conditions around the world.
To help spread the message about his clean water campaign, Water.org, actor Matt Damon has enlisted the help of Bono, Olivia Wilde, and Sir Richard Branson, who have all vowed to go on a “toilet strike,” and not go to the bathroom, until everyone in the world has access to clean water and sanitation. According to Water.org, currently, 2.5 billion people don’t have working toilets or clean water at their disposal, and now Branson, Bono and Wilde will add themselves to that list until the number drastically changes.
Back in February, Damon, cofounder of Water.org, starred in a mock-press conference video, which later went viral, and announced he would hold his bladder (and other bodily functions) in order to get the attention of fans, and promote the organization’s efforts. The video was a first in a series that will include even more celebrities, now that Bono and others are part of the no-toilet-using brigade.
Damon says using humor in his videos was the best way to flush information about the ”global water crisis” into the brains of YouTube viewers and engage more people. “The concept of experimenting with comedy to generate new levels of awareness and participation in the cause is something we’ve been toying with for a couple of years,” Damon said in a statement. “If [celebrities] can generate millions of views on YouTube for something ridiculous, then we should be able to do better for one of the most important and solvable issues of our time.”
In the latest video, Bono, Wilde and Branson try their hand at the humor concept, calling Damon a “wanker” (that’s an unflattering British term) and joking that they are part of the notorious “Illuminati.”
As if the idea of holding it in wasn’t enough to get people to join the cause, Damon promises viewers, through deductive reasoning, that if you don’t go to the bathroom “you’re a celebrity.”
Now if that’s not enough of an incentive to harm your insides, we don’t know what is.
