Casey Affleck to Star in Boston Marathon Movie
Casey Affleck might be coming home in the near future. According to Variety, the Boston-bred actor is confirmed to star and produce a film about the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing.
The movie is an adaption of the book Boston Strong written by Casey Sherman and Dave Wedge. In July of last year, The Fighter screenwriters Eric Johnson and Paul Tamasy purchased the movie rights before a single word of it was written. The book Boston Strong is yet to be released, with a pub date set for February 2015.
According to Variety, during the planning process, Johnson and Tamasy were unsure if they wanted to make a TV series or film covering the events at the 2013 marathon. Now, having decided on a film, they’ve decided the plot will follow the bombings on the day of the marathon, the manhunt for Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, and the city’s reaction to the events afterward.
Affleck is producing along with his partner, John Ridley, and Dorothy Aufiero. The actor has a long history of bringing his films back to his Boston roots, including titles like Good Will Hunting, Gone Baby Gone, and The Finest Hours, a project currently shooting around town—The Finest Hours is also based on a book by Sherman.
