Meghan Trainor Wins Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards
Meghan Trainor has come a long way since playing in her family’s band around Nantucket.
The Massachusetts-born pop singer had a big night at the 58th annual Grammy Awards on Monday as she took home her first ever Grammy. Trainor beat out fellow nominees Courtney Barnett, James Bay, Sam Hunt, and Tori Kelly in the Best New Artist category.
After being introduced by last year’s winner Sam Smith, the “All About That Bass” star gave a tearful acceptance speech.
“I’m a mess. I’m sorry,” Trainor said while fighting back the tears. “Thank you Atom Factory and Troy Carter for managing me, and my mom and dad for always believing in me, and Charm La’Donna for making me an artist.”

In addition to earning her first Grammy Award, Trainor got the chance to perform during a special tribute to Lionel Richie. The Massachusetts native sang Richie’s classic tune “You Are” in a medley that included performances by John Legend, Demi Lovato, Tyrese, and Luke Bryan.
Trainor wasn’t the only local who came up big on Monday.
The Boston Symphony Orchestra and conductor Andris Nelsons won in the Best Orchestral Performance category for Shostakovich: Under Stalin’s Shadow – Symphony No. 10. BSO Music Director Laureate Seiji Ozawa and the Saito Kinen Orchestra won Best Opera Recording for their recording of Ravel’s L’Enfant Et Les Sortilèges and Shéhérazade.
Berklee-trained artist Anna Wise also won in the Best Rap/Sung Collaboration category for her work on Kendrick Lamar’s “These Walls” while Massachusetts-bred comic Louis C.K. won in the Best Comedy Album category for Live At Madison Square Garden.
