Simone Biles Wins Gold, Aly Raisman Wins Silver in Floor Exercise at Rio Olympics

Aly Raisman may need some help carrying all of those medals back to Massachusetts.

The Needham native earned her third medal of the 2016 Olympics during her last day of competition in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday. The U.S. women’s gymnastics team captain put on another action-packed performance to win silver in the floor exercise final.

Raisman, who won gold in the event at the 2012 Olympics in London, notched an impressive score of 15.5. However, she was edged out by her teammate Simone Biles, who earned a score of 15.966. Great Britan’s Amy Tinkler came in third with a score of 14.933.

The victory gave Biles her fourth gold medal and fifth overall medal of the Games. The budding sports star became the first American woman to earn four gold medals in gymnastics in one run at the Olympics.

It was also a big moment for Raisman, who earned her sixth career Olympic medal and became the first American to win two Olympic medals in floor exercise.

After amazing individual displays and taking home the gold in the team competition, the U.S. gymnastics squad finished strong at this year’s Olympics. They set a record for a single Games thanks to Raisman and Biles, who earned the Americans their eighth and ninth medals.

Following their powerful performances, the decorated gymnastics stars embraced and celebrated on the mats.
