Mitt Romney Hates Loves Bob Dole

Mitt Romney has said his two great regrets in life are not having more children (yes, really) and never serving in the military. While skipping out on military service hasn’t been a hindrance for some presidential candidates, non-military men must tread carefully when surrounded by veterans. Especially around veterans like John McCain, who is regarded as a genuine American hero.

Unfortunately, Romney has all the grace of a toddler in his father’s wingtips and he manged to insult two prominent Republican veterans in one fell swoop this morning.

As you may have guessed, Romney was speaking off the cuff on FOX and Friends when he was asked what he thought about former senator Bob Dole’s letter to Rush Limbaugh lauding McCain’s conservative cred.

Romney had said the former Kansas senator was “probably the last person I would have wanted to have write a letter for me.”

Yes, who’d want a letter of recommendation from a man who was awarded two Purple Hearts for his service in World War II, whose right arm is paralyzed, and who served in the Senate for nearly 30 years before earning the GOP nomination for president?

McCain immediately called Romney out.

Governor Romney’s attack on Bob Dole is disgraceful, and Governor Romney should apologize. Bob Dole is a war hero who has spent his life in service to this nation and nobody has worked harder to build the Republican Party. Bob Dole deserves the respect of every American and certainly every Republican.

(Incidentally, it’s nice of him to remind us that Bob Dole loves to speak in the third person.)

Romney, naturally, went to his favorite damage control strategy — he flip-flopped.

A short time later, Romney also referred to Dole as “an American hero.” He added that he would love to have the former senator’s support for his own bid.

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: We’ll miss you when you’re gone Mitt. Really.
