Curt Schilling’s Bizarro Press Conference

The big news out of Red Sox camp yesterday wasn’t that Curt Schilling talked about his injury — and his argument with the team about how to treat said injury. It was about Schilling and Dan Shaughnessy. Or, more to the point, it was about Schilling.

As you all must know by now, Schilling didn’t get the E-vites out in time, so his invited guests were whispered the password and told to assemble in the parking lot. The Herald, ProJo, and Courant were all included. And, of course, so was NESN. The Globe was not.

Since when did the Red Sox clubhouse turn into an episode of Gossip Girl?

Whether it was a diss at Shaughnessy for saying mean things or a slap at the team (you may have heard the New York Times Co., the parent company of the Globe, owns a 17 percent stake in the Red Sox), Schilling’s stunt was petty and juvenile.

Also left out was Gordon Edes, one of the best beat writers in any town, covering any sport. Edes may be less hyperbolic than his brethren, but he can still deliver a blow when he’s backed into a corner. Here’s his lead:

Curt Schilling, who said he held off on addressing his situation because he didn’t want to be a distraction but became even more of a story this past week because of his silence, met with a few handpicked reporters in the parking lot this morning after he furtively whispered instructions that they meet him there.

If Schilling wanted to enjoy one more season in the spotlight, he’s apparently not going to let a little old thing like not playing get in the way.
