Street Style: Breath of Fresh Air

Recent transplant Martha Golonko's style is smart but approachable.

On a lazy Saturday afternoon, I caught Martha Golonko window-shopping on Newbury Street. She admitted to being a little “caught off guard” when I approached her and asked about her look, but she was “happy to have a few seconds of Boston fame.” The Chicago native is relatively new to our city and has a casual and smart take on style and on what she sees around her.

What are you wearing?
[She hesitates, looks down, and scans her outfit] The t-shirt is my own, the skirt is from Club Monaco, my bag is Kate Spade, the sandals are Tory Burch, the sunglasses are Ray Bans, I have my Tiffany’s engagement ring on along with my mother’s vintage ring and the bracelets I picked up in Peru.

Who are you favorite designers?
I like Tory Burch. I’m also recently into Vince sweaters and Chloé shoes, so you can add those to my small list of favorite designers.

What’s your personal aesthetic?
I aim for elegance and “street chic!”

Where do you like to shop?
Saks — they have everything.

What’s one piece that you simply can’t live without?
A good pair of sunglasses and a terrific bag — they are essential.

What’s one item you are dying to get your hands on?
I don’t know if it will ever happen, but a Cartier watch

What do you think of Boston’s style?
Well, I’m originally from Chicago…I find Chicagoans to be a little label-crazy, so I guess one can say Bostonian shoppers are a bit more demure and modest, yet still fashionable.

What’s the last museum exhibit you went to?
I recently went to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum… I especially enjoyed the tranquil yet extravagant garden inside.
