Business is booming for Boston’s gluten-free bakeries. More places than ever before have started offering gluten-free selections of savory baked goods and sweet desserts, but unless they have a separate kitchen, cross-contamination can be a common problem. But not to worry, there’s more than a few bakeries that make allergen safety their top priority. Here’s our roundup of where to find delectable goodies—100 percent sans gluten—in and around Boston.

Last updated February 2021.

Jennifer Lee’s Gourmet Bakery

Entirely allergen-friendly and vegan, Jennifer Lee’s fulfills its namesake founder’s goal of providing tasty treats that are safe for everyone. The bakery’s gluten-free, dairy-free, egg-free and nut-free donuts, cookies, brownies, and breads are available for delivery anywhere in Massachusetts, and on-site at its permanent stall in the Boston Public Market. Plus, specialty items like cakes, cannoli, and bagels can be made to order.

Treat Cupcake Bar

While Treat isn’t an entirely gluten-free bakery, they have dedicated “gluten-free days” when the entire kitchen and all equipment is sanitized for baking and decorating GF cupcakes, ensuring no cross-contamination. With an extensive list of flavor options—including mochaccino, French toast, blueberry pancake, and more—every customer is guaranteed to find something they like. But for those who can’t decide, the cupcakerie also offers a make-your-own cupcake bar and mini cupcake samplers.

Twist Bakery Café

Opened in 2011, Twist was inspired by founder Kathryn Ernst’s own disappointment with the quality of gluten-free foods available on the market. Her solution? A family-run operation that boasts hand-crafted baked goods (and paninis, soups, and brunch items) made with high-quality ingredients and zero gluten. Stop by one of Twist’s two locations in Burlington and Millis to be met with bakery cases full of cookies, cakes, bars and breads.

Something Sweet Without Wheat

This bakery, with quite an apt name, offers desserts devoid of gluten, nuts, dairy, and even eggs, if you prefer. Something Sweet Without Wheat serves the Boston area with desserts that have just the right balance of sweet and no wheat. Visit their Woburn location for chocolate croissants, mozzarella cheese baguettes, classic chocolate chip cookies, and more—or order online and get anything from their menu shipped to your front door.
