We all want to help. But the Red Cross and other blood donation centers made statements directly after the marathon bombings that they had enough blood. But what happens now when those supplies are depleting? Giving blood is great in times of tragedy, but it is also important year-round.

A new statement from the Dana Farber/Brigham and Women’s Blood Donor Center says, “The tragic events at the Boston Marathon have led to an overwhelming outpouring of support to the Blood Donor Center. If you’re considering donating blood or platelets, the center requests that you call to schedule a blood or platelet donation and consider scheduling your donation in the coming weeks to help us replenish and maintain the supply of blood products to meet the needs of patients at both Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. To schedule a donation, email blooddonor@partners.org with your preferred donation type (blood or platelets), days you prefer to donate, and a phone number.”

The Red Cross is hosting blood drives on April 26th at three locations in Dedham, Cambridge, and Boston. Plus, if you give blood in April, you get a free pair on New Balance socks.
