Indoor Cycling Studio to Open in Southie
Indoor-cycling studios are popular all over the country. Here in Boston, we’ve been blessed with the fantastic Recycle Studio that has two city locations in the South End and the Back Bay and Sweat and Soul Yoga in Brighton which offers the amazing Real Ryder bikes. But we were wondering when we’d get another indoor-cycling only studio in town. Other cities like New York have a plethora of studios, including two big ones, Flywheel and Soul Cycle. But starting next month, Boston will finally get into a spinning war where everybody wins.
The Handle Bar will be opening June 8th in Southie, and we couldn’t be more excited. The neighborhood is filled with warehouse-type gyms like CrossFit and boxing, and also has a few neighborhood spots, but it is seriously lacking when it comes to higher-end fitness establishments. The studio is set to open in the Macallen building across the street from the Broadway T station (and the new Starbucks! Southie residents know the reason for that exclamation point). The Handle Bar will feature 30 brand new bikes and offer amenities like spin shoe rentals ($2).
So why Southie? Owner Jessica Bashelor tells us that it was the perfect location. “I spent a lot of time trying to find the right home for The Handle Bar. When I saw the space in the Macallen Building, it became clear to me that Southie was the perfect neighborhood to support our business and brand,” Bashelor says. “The Handle Bar embraces a ‘work hard, play hard’ mentality and what better place to grow that concept than the youngest, hippest neighborhood in the city? I am absolutely thrilled to be opening in Southie.”
Classes will be 45 and 60 minutes long and the music will be curated with the latest house and hip-hop remixes in addition to the occasional live deejay. Every class features the use of weighted bars to incorporate an upper body workout. The Handle Bar offers a single class for $20 and packages including five, 10, 20, or 40 classes ranging in price from $95 to $640. Bikes can be reserved online up to seven days in advance. Walk-ins will also be welcome.
This is a much needed addition to the neighborhood and we’ll be checking it out opening week to do a follow-up post with new photos of the space.
