Acroyoga, a combination of acrobatics, Thai massage, and partner yoga, is slowly infiltrating Boston’s fitness scene. This summer, Boston hosted its first AcroYoga festival, and more and more studios are offering weekly AcroYoga classes. We’ve put together a list of where you can go to find this fun yoga trend.
Karma Yoga Newbury
Newbury Street’s recently opened yoga studio offers AcroYoga classes with Boston-based AcroYoga expert Pat Donaher, every Sunday afternoon. To avoid coming down with a case of the Mondays, grab a partner and reenergize before Monday even starts. Drop-in rates are a standard $15 and this particular class is cited as intermediate/advanced, so beginners may want to check out one of the other studios below.
Karma Yoga Newbury, 338 Newbury Street, third floor above Trident Booksellers and Cafe, every Sunday 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. $15. For more information, visit karmayogastudios.com
KarmaRevolution
If Newbury Street isn’t your style, or you’re an AcroYoga newbie, catch a B line train to Karma’s Allston location. KarmaRevolution is also an all donation yoga studio, where you pay what you can every time. Donaher makes an appearance again from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. and will end your weekend on a calm and rejuvenated note.
KarmaRevolution, 971 Commonwealth Avenue, third floor, Allston, every Sunday 7:70 to 9:00 p.m. $5 and up. For more information, visit karmayogastudios.com
Brooklyn Boulders Somerville
Although primarily known for their 50 foot rock-climbing wall, this New York transplant also hosts a schedule full of yoga classes, one of which is AcroYoga. To shake off the stresses of your Monday, head to Somerville straight from the office. Instructors Anton and Austin host a 90 minute class from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. every Monday. You’ll want to make this part of your regular Monday routine.
Brooklyn Boulders Somerville, 12A Tyler Street, Somerville, every Monday 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. $25. For more information, visit bkbsomerville.com
Back Bay Yoga
Conveniently located near the Public Gardens on Boylston Street, Back Bay Yoga offers everything from AcroYoga to hot yoga. AcroYoga on Mondays at Back Bay is a blend of asana warm-up, partner yoga, inversions, flying, and partner Thai massage. You can bring your own partner, but its not required; instead you’ll get the opportunity to bond with a stranger who shares your yoga love. All levels are welcome.
Back Bay Yoga, 364 Boylston Street, second floor, every Monday 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. $15. For more information, visit backbayyoga.com
The Breathing Room, Central Square
Certified instructor Sandy Kalik takes all levels of Acro yogis on a journey to explore trust and interconnectivity in her AcroYoga: Thai and Fly class every Wednesday. This class emphasizes the therapeutic partner yoga and Thai massage elements of AcroYoga, but again, you are not required to bring your own partner. If you want to wind down after flying around the studio, Kalik also teaches a Restful Yoga class afterward.
The Breathing Room, 763 Massachusetts Avenue #7, Central Square, Cambridge, every Wednesday 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. $20. For more information, visit breathingroomboston.com
Spontaneous Celebrations
For those of you who stick to your Jamaica Plain homegrown style, AcroYoga has come to you too. Every Wednesday, join up with the JP community and let the energy flow. This class is only an hour and is performed in a wide open community space, so there’s no pressure for beginners trying Acro for the first time.
Spontaneous Celebrations, 45 Danforth Street, Jamaica Plain, every Wednesday from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. $15. For more information, visit spontaneouscelebrations.org
Coolidge Corner Yoga
This studio, recently opened and family-owned, offers all kinds of unique yoga classes, from AcroYoga to toddlers’ yoga to Friday Night Flow complete with an 80’s pop playlist. This studio is also unique because you get to do good while you exercise; a portion of Coolidge Corner Yoga’s yearly profits are donated to a charity of the studio community’s choice. Catch up with Sandy Kalik again on Thursdays and maybe catch a movie at the Coolidge Corner theater after. All AcroYoga levels are welcome.
