The 5th annual Run to Home Base event will be held Saturday, July 19 at Fenway Park. Proceeds will benefit the Red Sox Foundation and the Massachusetts General Hospital Home Base Program, an initiative which provides clinical care and support services to veterans and their families dealing with “invisible war wounds” such as post-traumatic stress disorder or traumatic brain injury. Founded after the Red Sox won the World Series in 2007, the program serves families throughout New England.

“What is different about our program is that we are a family based clinic. For every warrior there are really 10 warriors because everyone around that individual is always affected. The point of entry may not be the individual, sometimes someone else seeks support,” Rebecca Weintraub Brendel, clinical director of the Veterans Program at the Red Sox Foundation, told Boston last year. “We have a broad definition of family: Military spouse or children, anyone who is important in the life of a veteran or service members, including close friends.”

This year’s fundraiser will kick off at 7:10 a.m. with an opening ceremony. The main event begins at 8 a.m., when more than 2,600 runners and walkers—including 500 active service members and their relatives—will compete in a 9K run and three-mile walk which begins and ends at Fenway. The event will also feature a variety of family activities, including photos with former Red Sox players and Wally the Green Monster, as well as self-guided park tours and veteran service exhibits. Several special guests, including Mayor Martin Walsh and Red Sox Chairman Tom Werner, are scheduled to appear.
