UPDATED 3:30 p.m. Dec. 31, 2014:

Republic Fitness, the new co-ed concept from Healthworks Group, is now open Downtown. The gym is high-tech and high-end, two valuable features for people who live and work in the burgeoning district. It’s a new entirely new playground for Healthworks Group, and it’s clearly a part of a larger industry trend. Town Sports International, the owner and operator of Boston Sports Clubs, is also opening a digitally-savvy, brand new concept in the Back Bay this spring.

Below, the original piece announcing the new club and the back story on Healthworks’ decision to expand.

Original story:

Healthworks Group, the family-owned and operated gym group, which runs all of the women-only Healthworks clubs (in addition to two GymIt locations and Healthworks Community Fitness) is launching a brand new gym concept this winter—and its co-ed.

About six months ago, the team at Healthworks was looking for ways to expand. It was widely-publicized that the group was looking to take over the now closed Chestnut Hill Sports Club/LA.  The deal fell through in the 11th hour. But, Marketing Director Tara Wislocki says that the lease for the upcoming downtown gym was signed well before the deals were in negotiations. “The first spark of the idea was just six months ago,” Wislocki says. “It’s been pretty fast.” Fast enough that in just six months, the idea for a luxe co-ed club went from proposition to reality.

Republic Fitness, a brand new fitness concept from the Healthworks Group, will be offering pre-sale pricing and signups starting October 7 for the new club that is set to open downtown in December. “It’s going to be a premium co-ed brand,” Wislocki says. “It’s the first one that Healthworks group is launching. It’s a brand-new club with group fitness classes, state-of-the-art equipment, and personal trainers. It’ll be a innovative space with an industrial feel.”

The new club will take over the first two floors at Two International Place in the Financial District. “[It’s a] great addition to our locations,” Wislocki says. “We haven’t had a presence [in the Financial District] and many current members were asking about a downtown location.” There’s going to be a wide array of classes from HIIT to barre, fresh fruit, coat checks, towel service, free wifi, and members lounges. “We wanted to show that it was going to be co-ed and not another Healthworks,” she says.

The new space may also have all-inclusive memberships, meaning if you join Republic Fitness, you could also get access to Healthworks (if you are female), and the two GymIt locations. While those details—and others—are still being worked out, the most important parts have already been addressed, like pricing. The pre-opening membership rate for Republic Fitness (only) is $100 a month to start. After pre-sales end, the membership price will be $120, which, let’s face it, is pricey, but comparable to the other luxe gyms downtown.
