Elizabeth Warren Proves Once Again Why She’s the Pride of Massachusetts
Sorry Beyonce, Rihanna, and Nicki, but the real Queen Bee lives in D.C.
The pride of Massachusetts, Senator Elizabeth Warren, gave the Senate an education on Monday while giving a speech to a room full of politicians—some of whom still think you can’t get pregnant from rape—and dissected fact from fiction. She was there because our elected officials in the Senate were trying to defund Planned Parenthood, an organization that has been at the center of controversy for a long time, even though it provides millions of women the important health care treatments they need to live—Pap tests, AIDS tests, testing and treatment of STDs, anemia testing, cholesterol screenings, diabetes screenings, and treatment for basic women’s health care needs. (Disclosure: I have been to Planned Parenthood many, many times for my yearly appointments, like so many other women in this country.) Rather than talking about ways to fix our country’s crumbling infrastructure, our elected officials would rather spend time and taxpayer dollars debating women’s bodies and reproductive rights—again. And again. And again.
Warren begins with:
“I come to the Senate floor today to ask my Republican colleagues a question. Do you have any idea what year it is? Did you fall down, hit your head, and think you woke up in the 1950s? Or the 1890s? Should we call for a doctor?”
No matter where you stand on politics and policy, it’s hard to not be proud that this slay queen reps the Commonwealth. She continues:
“Because I simply cannot believe that in the year 2015, the United States Senate would be spending its time trying to defund women’s healthcare centers. On second thought, maybe I shouldn’t be surprised. The Republicans have had a plan for years to strip away women’s rights to make choices over our own bodies.”
