Susan G. Komen for the Cure Awards Yearly Grants

The Massachusetts chapter of Susan G. Komen f0r the Cure announced Tuesday the eight non-profit organizations it will award grants to for 2013-2014. The money given will total more than $325,000 and be put toward the organizations’ efforts in women’s health, general healthcare, and top-notch community medicine.
The groups receiving grants will be:
- Community Health Center of Cape Cod, a Mashpee-based center will a full slate of women’s health services and well as other medical care
- Community Servings, a Boston company that delivers meals to people with serious illnesses
- Holyoke Health Center, which provides community-based medical and dental care
- Joseph M. Smith Community Health Center, which serves the communities of Allston, Brighton, and Waltham
- Milford Regional Medical Center, a full-service community and teaching hospital accessed by more than 20 Massachusetts towns
- Women’s Imaging Center at Berkshire Medical Center, a group committed to providing women’s health screenings and diagnostic services
- YWCA of Greater Lawrence, which offers programs focusing on women’s health and issues as well as general wellness
- YWCA of Southeastern MA, which seeks to eliminate racism and empower women
Each year, the foundation selects several non-profit groups throughout the state that are doing lifesaving work in line with Susan G. Komen’s mission of finding a cure for breast cancer and providing high-quality care to all who need it. Locally, Komen MA’s focus is on providing breast cancer screening to all women, enhancing education, and providing care to everyone regardless of social or economic barriers. A release from the organization quotes Jeanette Beltran about the grants:
“Our grantees are vehicles for change at the grass roots level, helping to break down barriers to care by providing services ranging from transportation to and from medical appointments and assisting with language and cultural challenges, to providing financial assistance with medical,” says Jeanette Beltran, Director of Community Initiatives at Komen MA. “These programs allow us to serve the entire Affiliate coverage area statewide, and provide resources to ensure a continuum of care model.”
