Boston Researchers Named to List of ‘Influential Scientific Minds’

Researchers from several Boston hospitals and universities have been named to Thompson Reuter’s 2014 list of the “World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds.” Released earlier this summer, the list highlights the top thinkers in 21 fields of study such as clinical medicine, genetics, neuroscience, and psychiatry.

“Science and innovation are strong drivers of the future—and these people are making that future come to life,” Basil Moftah, president of Thomson Reuters IP & Science, said in a statement. “The global nature of the study highlights the countries, institutions and researchers on the cutting edge of science.”

According to the Thomson Reuters report, researchers were selected based on how frequently their publications were cited by other scientists over an 11-year period.

The list includes researchers from Harvard University, Massachusetts General Hospital, MIT, Boston Children’s Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), Boston University, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Northeastern University, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Tufts University, Veteran Affairs Boston Healthcare System, and the Broad Institute. Massachusetts institutions outside of Boston, such as Lahey Hospital and UMass Worcester, are acknowledged as well.

“This type of recognition carries enormous weight,” BIDMC’s Chief Academic Officer Vikas P. Sukhatme said in a statement. “Such an objective analysis indicates the tremendous value of an investigator’s work to his or her own field and, more broadly, to biomedical research and the advancement of medical discoveries.”
