Sweetgreen Reopens After Health Code Violations

UPDATED, October 19, 11:30 a.m.: Sweetgreen’s Downtown Crossing shop has reopened after passing a second inspection, a brand spokesman says. President and COO Karen Kelley offered the following comments:
“This morning we reopened our Downtown Crossing location after having voluntarily closed on Tuesday. We took this step out of an abundance of caution for our guests and are pleased that the City reinforced our efforts this morning. Over the past few months our company has made significant investments in our infrastructure and our people….Our Boston community is our family—we have a team of more than 500 employees and a loyal customer base that has become an integral part of the Sweetgreen story. Our commitment to this community remains strong and we look forward to the future.”

It’s been quite a week for Sweetgreen. On the bright side, the chain opened its ninth Boston location. On the quite-a-bit-less bright side, its restaurant at 13 School Street was temporarily shut down Tuesday for health code violations.
The closure came after an anonymous tip from a patron who got sick after eating one of the chain’s salads, WCVB reports. The Inspectional Services Department (ISD) then assessed the restaurant and found five code violations, enough to call for a voluntary closure. ISD confirmed the closure via Twitter.
The School Street branch’s five violations pale in comparison to the 20 found at Sweetgreen‘s Boylston Street shop in August. That store temporarily shut down, too, depriving Back Bay consumers of delightful salads and grain bowls for a long, hard couple of days.
Inspectors will reportedly revisit the School Street restaurant on Wednesday, and it may reopen if it passes. Even if it does, though, the chain’s typically obscenely long lines may be looking a little sparse after this incident.
