A Very Adult Sex Education

On November 1, a new sex education bill was introduced to the U.S. House and Senate. The Healthy Youth Act (H.R. 3324) would bring high school students a sex education that covered prevention of STDs, unwanted pregnancies, dating violence, sexual abuse, and bullying, and would also support LGBTQ rights and the importance of healthy relationships. You can read more about the act at TinyNibbles, or actively support it here. It’s about time sex education stepped into the limelight.

Adults are often in need of sex ed., too. I mean, how many of us had a high school sex education that taught us what the clitoris was and sang the praises of lube? I did actually get a high school sex education, which makes me one of the luckier ones, though it only consisted of a five-minute video involving a condom and a banana. (If that doesn’t sound X-rated, I don’t know what does.)

But what about learning to rebuild intimacy after the kids have left home? Or realizing that your full-on career has pulled you away from your sex life? Or wanting to bring fire and freshness into your solo sex life? Or feeling like having sex again … but how, and with whom? At times like these, we need a more personalized approach, no matter how shy or brazen the rest of our sex lives might be.

Well, there are lots of options. You can choose individual or couples therapy if you want to refresh a relationship, or gain the confidence to feel sexual while you’re solo. Alternatively, you might open new possibilities by taking sexy classes that suit your needs. Keep your eye out for one-night courses with Good Vibrations in Brookline, and Erotic Writing classes at Grub Street, Boston. Kink Academy provide local classes, too, and their online, educational videos don’t shy away from the fact that sex is sexy. Adult material, in the best of ways.

Incidentally, if you’re married, the folks behind Supernanny and the Real Housewives of NYC are casting for a new docu-series. The casting crew is looking for married couples who want to amp up the spark in their relationships and are ready to transform their sex lives. (If this sounds like you, email the crew with your interest.)

And while we’re at it, let’s get our young people the sex education they need.
