Gov. Patrick Naming Former Aide William 'Mo' Cowan to Interim Senate Seat
Update: Patrick's office has made it official with a press release announcing Cowan's appointment.
Original: Gov. Deval Patrick will reportedly name his former chief of staff and chief legal counsel Mo Cowan to the interim Senate seat left vacant by John Kerry, according to WBZ's Jon Keller. Cowan announced his departure from Patrick's administration in November 2012 for the private sector. The pick is notable for being … not Barney Frank, the retired Congressman who rather publicly lobbied for the seat. It'll also bring a relatively unknown aide into the spotlight. Cowan follows a path not unlike the governor’s own rise from the South Side of Chicago to the State House. Like Patrick four years ago, Cowan will face the challenge of over coming a relative lack of political experience.
He is hardly a stranger to sharp elbows, however, as a career litigator groomed at one of the city’s most politically connected firms.
Cowan lives in Stoughton, and he explained his love for the town to Boston last March.
