Will Deep Cuts Save the Atlantic Cod Fishing Industry?

Will Deep Cuts to Harvest Help Save the Atlantic Cod Fishing Industry? On Wednesday, the New England Fishery Management Council voted to reduce the cod harvest in the Gulf of Maine for the next three years by 77 percent from last year's harvest. The council is deeply divided, with some viewing it as a measure to help save the industry, while others recognizing it as a deadly blow to the livelihoods of fishermen and scores of other associated jobs. “I’m leaving here in a coffin,” said Carlos Rafael, who owns a commercial fishing business in New Bedford. “With all these cuts, I won’t be able to keep half of my fleet working. I’ll have to cut down from 20 groundfish boats to maybe five or six.”  [NYT]
