Governor Patrick Will Pay His Dues After Losing Stanley Cup Bet

Keeping his word, and being a good sport about the Bruins losing to the Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup finals, Governor Deval Patrick will pack up his things and head to Chicago on Tuesday to pay off his debt.

Back in June, before the two teams took to the ice to battle it out for the championship, Patrick and Illinois Governor Pat Quinn placed a friendly wager on the outcome of the series.

Here’s what the deal was:

If the Bruins win, Governor Quinn will volunteer at the Greater Boston Food Bank. If the Blackhawks win, Governor Patrick will volunteer at the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

The Greater Chicago Food Depository distributes donated and purchased food through a network of 650 pantries, soup kitchens and shelters, similar to the operations of the Greater Boston Food Bank. When the bet was made, Patrick said win or lose, everyone benefitted from the wager. “[I’m] delighted to join with Governor Quinn to use the excitement of the playoffs to draw attention to the important issue of food insecurity,” he said at the time. 

Sadly, staying true to his word when it comes to sporting-based bets has become common for Patrick. In 2012, the governor put his faith in the New England Patriots, and made a food-centric gamble against New York Governor Andrew Cuomo ahead of the team’s Super Bowl appearance. The Patriots lost that game too, and Patrick had to meet his end of the bargain, delivering a plethora of food options to Patriots rivals the Giants.

There has been no word yet from Mayor Tom Menino’s office about when the outgoing official will send over a laundry list of items from Boston, to Chicago Governor Rahm Emanuel.
