Two More Somerville Fires Are Under Investigation By State Officials

Somerville Firefighters responded to two separate two-alarm fires early Wednesday morning, marking the eleventh, and twelfth blazes officials have battled since June.

The early morning fires, which occurred around 5:30 a.m. on Bromfield Street, and shortly after on Summer Street, are still under investigation, however, they come at a time when state and local officials are investigating a rash of suspicious fires in Somerville that have been deemed arson.

Last week, Mayor Joe Curtatone, State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan, and Somerville public safety officials held a press conference and offered up a $15,000 reward to anyone with information that could lead to the arrest and prosecution of those involved with three separate fires that were set, destroying Somerville homes, this summer.

Over the last three months, twelve house fires have been reported. As of Wednesday, three have been ruled as intentionally set. The latest two fires are still being investigated by the state fire marshal.

“To date, we are fortunate that these fires have not resulted in any significant injury or loss of life to any member of our community or our public safety personnel. Our firefighters and first responders have done a great job,” Curtatone said last week. “We are aggressively pursuing a number of leads and have been working and continue to work closely with both state and federal agencies on this investigation.”

No one was injured as the result of the fires on Wednesday either, according to officials. Curtatone previously urged residents to be alert, and vigilant, and to report any suspicious activity.

On Wednesday, the first fire on Bromfield Road appeared to have started by the couch on the front porch on the first floor, according to the Somerville Journal. The second fire, which officials responded to just 15 minutes after later, damaged a car and extended to the side the house.

Fire Officials were not immediately available for comment. Boston will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
