Dorchester’s John Howard Added to Card for UFC Fight Night 80
UFC welterweight John “Doomsday” Howard (23-11) is due back in the octagon on December 10 in Las Vegas for a bout with Tim Means (24-7-1) on the fight card for UFC Fight Night 80.
The Dorchester fighter and former middleweight recently renewed his contract with the UFC after snapping a three-fight losing streak with a split-decision win over Cathal Pendred of Dublin, a much larger opponent who fought on less than a month’s notice. Howard has fought at welterweight since 2013 and has not had issues making weight at 170 pounds in recent fights.
Howard struggled in previous two fights with an early TKO loss to Lorenz Larkin in Boston at UFC Fight Night 59 and two decision loses to to Brian Ebersole and Ryan LaFlare at UFC 178 and UFC Fight Night 39, respectively.
Means, a veteran fighter like Howard, has had the opposite luck of Howard, winning four out of his last five fights. His winning streak came to an end at UFC 189 when he lost by submission to Matt “The Immortal” Brown on a guillotine choke in the final 15 seconds of the first round. Prior to his loss to Brown, Means defeated George Sullivan by submission with triangle choke at UFC on Fox 15 and a fast TKO finish at UFC 184 over Dhiego Lima.
Howard and Means have a common opponent in Brown. Howard lost by unanimous decision to the much larger Brown in 2011. The loss sent Howard out of the UFC for two years as it was his third consecutive loss for the promotion.
UFC Fight Night 80 will take place at The Chelsea at The Cosmopolitan resort and casino. The fights will be shown exclusively on the UFC’s subscriber-only Fight Pass streaming service. Strawweight fighters Paige VanZant and Joanne Calderwood are headlining the card in a non-title fight.
