Spotted: A Big Papi Statue at Fenway Park
Yes, that is a Big Papi statue at home plate. Presumably won’t be there when #Rays and #RedSox start playing tonight pic.twitter.com/IrfHJmfzpT

Update, Wednesday, August 31: Mystery: solved. The statue is a life-size likeness of David Ortiz made out of LEGO.

At least two baseball reporters noticed something strange at Fenway Park today. Standing there at home plate was a life-size likeness of the slugger, frozen in time, fingers pointed skyward, looking the way he does when he rounds the bases after yet another homer.
The likeness of David Ortiz appeared without explanation, and, according to MassLive’s Jen McCaffrey, was quickly tipped on its side and whisked off the field.
And there he goes. pic.twitter.com/SjirFBui6T

It’s in full color, so it’s not the bronze tribute that fans have been clamoring for. It also appears, at least from a distance, not to be anything like the botched batch of Big Papi bobbleheads that raised more than a few eyebrows earlier this month.
So what is it?
Attempts to reach the Red Sox media relations team were unsuccessful.
The Red Sox play the Rays tonight at 7:10 p.m. Also, this year’s installment of a radio-telethon for the Jimmy Fund at Fenway kicked off today.
