Sam Adams to Release a David Ortiz Beer Called ‘Big Hapi’
The fall was a maelstrom of tributes to David Ortiz—candles, a shark, a donut mural—to celebrate his final season with the Sox. It was only a matter of time before Sam Adams joined in on all the Big Papi-branded fun.
The Jamaica Plain brewery announced today that, for one day only, it will be selling bottles of mango-infused IPA it’s calling Big Hapi. It’s a double IPA infused with mango, and it will be available to those who show up in person to claim one on Friday.
“Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to watch David Ortiz hit homers out of the park while enjoying a cold Sam Adams,” says Jim Koch, Sam Adams’ founder. “Now, I’m excited to toast to his record-setting career with Big Hapi Double IPA. We’re thrilled to honor our hometown baseball hero by doing what we do best, brewing beer, and giving craft beer and baseball fans a commemorative brew to honor an extraordinary legend.”
Only 541 of the 24-ounce bottles will be sold (“one for each home run Big Papi crushed out of the park throughout his 19 year career,” per a release). They’ll cost $29.99 apiece. Proceeds benefit the David Ortiz Children’s Fund.
A line will start forming at 2 p.m. at the brewery on Friday, according to the Facebook page for the event, and they’ll start handing out bottles at 4 p.m.
Another local brewery, Idle Hands crafted a David Ortiz-inspired porter earlier this month called “34.” Commonwealth Brewing Company has a “Big Papi” beer, too. It’s a double IPA.
