Boston Marathon 2017 Finish Line Photos
Mother Nature smiled kindly upon Boston Marathon runners on Monday, granting them partly sunny skies, 70-degree weather, and low humidity.
Runners showed their gratitude by shattering a few records—women’s wheelchair race winner Manuela Schar broke Boston records with a finish time of 1:28:16. The men’s wheelchair race victor, Marcel Hug, clocked in at 1:18:04, which ranks as a new world best time and his third Boston victory. Both of the wheelchair race winners have entered the Boston Marathon before, but it was the first time competing in Boston for the two winning elite runners. Geoffrey Kirui and Edna Kiplagat both crossed the finish line representing Kenya. (See the complete list of winners here.)
Trailing not far behind was the marathon’s 2014 winner, Meb Keflezighi. After the former champ finished the race, he proceeded to wave to spectators, hug the elite winners, and embrace the family of Martin Richard, the youngest victim of the 2013 bombing. An hours-long sea of runners continued to make their way down Boylston Street, which included Boston Police Commissioner William Evans, former Patriots’ player Doug Flutie, and Andrew Frates, brother of Pete Frates. (You can read more about how the day unfolded here.)
Runner Kathrine Switzer celebrated a milestone—it’s been 50 years since she became the first woman to officially enter the Boston Marathon. This year, the Boston Athletic Association reports there are 13,714 women competing in the 2017 race.
