Green Line Service Suspended on All Four Branches Tuesday Morning

Wire damage between Copley and Arlington Station forced the MBTA to pause service in both directions between Kenmore and Government Center on the C and D branches. The B Branch is not running between Packards Corner and Government Center.

Updated at 11:19 a.m.: At 11:09 a.m. on Tuesday, the MBTA tweeted that regular service on all four branches of the Green Line had  resumed. The nightmare isn’t entirely over, though, as the T said customers should expect residual delays.

Updated at 10 a.m.: The MBTA expects regular trolley service to resume by 11 a.m., agency spokesman Joe Pesaturo said in an email.

Previously: A gigantic crowd swarmed the Kenmore Green Line station on Tuesday, but it had nothing to do with a Red Sox game at nearby Fenway Park.

No, these weren’t fans decked out in Mookie Betts jerseys, but rather, commuters sporting button-ups and khakis, glaring impatiently after their morning ride into the office was disrupted.

Green Line service was suspended between Government Center and Kenmore in both directions on Tuesday morning after overhead wire damage was sustained between Arlington and Copley Stations, MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo wrote in an email at 9:27 a.m.

No injuries have been reported, and passengers who were on-board trolleys at the time of the incident were evacuated safely.

“For all but two trains, customers exited onto platforms,” Pesaturo wrote in an email. “Customers were escorted off of two trains that were stuck between Boylston and Arlington Stations.”

At 9:32 a.m., the T wrote on Twitter it had extended the suspension of the B Branch of the Green Line to cover all stops between Packards Corner and Government Center. Service on the E Branch of the Green Line was paused between Northeastern and Government Center.

The T has replaced the sidelined trolleys with buses, though scores of people were left stranded Tuesday morning while they waited for the shuttles to arrive. The MBTA encouraged passengers to rely on the Orange Line between North Station and Back Bay and said riders should expect delays.

Several commuters took to Twitter to share their angst in the face of the Green Line’s transformation into a garbage fire.
