President Donald Trump, asked Friday about prostitution charges faced by his friend, Patriots owner Robert Kraft, called the situation “very sad.”

Well it’s very sad. I was very surprised to see it. He has proclaimed his innocence totally, and, uh, but I’m very surprised to see it,” the president said from the Oval Office when prompted by a reporter’s question.

Kraft was among many suspects swept up in a far-ranging human trafficking investigation in Florida after a sting operation at a Palm Beach spa, which officials said was operating as a front for prostitution. The 77-year-old billionaire faces two solicitation charges for two trips he allegedly took to the Orchids of Asia Day Spa last month to procure sex. He denies the allegations.

Trump and Kraft have long been close, even if they don’t always agree. Kraft previously described Trump as “a very close friend,” and he gave $1 million to fund Trump’s inauguration ceremony in 2017.
