Injuries Reported After Green Line Derailment Inside Tunnel

Ten people were injured after a Green Line trolley derailed inside of a tunnel in the Fenway area on Monday afternoon, according to transportation officials.

MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo said the first trolley car of a two-car D train that was heading to Riverside station derailed just west of Kenmore Station. The derailment occurred in a tunnel and led to the trolley car allegedly making contact with the side of the wall. The derailment occurred in an area where the tracks for the D and C lines intersect, he said.

Pesaturo said passengers who were onboard the train had to be walked off of the trolley and through the tunnel in order to get out. Once out of the tunnel, the riders were met by police and first responders who were ready to take anyone to the hospital that was suffering from pain. According to Pesaturo, several people, including the operator of the derailed car, were treated by EMS officials. There were around 40 passengers on the two trolleys at the time of the derailment and collision.

Shuttle buses replaced train service between stops as officers responded to the scene. Officials from the MBTA said there was no immediate clue as to what caused the derailment, but the accident is under investigation. Full service on the D line is expected to reopen by Tuesday morning.

Below is a short video shot by a passenger that was inside the tunnel at the time of the derailment. “The front car got derailed and crashed into the wall. Luckily almost everyone was seated,” they said. “Everyone seems to be fine aside from a few people feeling light headed.”
