Changes at WGBH’s News Division Are in the Works

Ted Canova is out at WGBH as the public broadcasting juggernaut’s managing director of news.

A memo from WGBH General Manager Philip Redo that was sent out to WGBH staffers this morning said that Canova is leaving the company on Thursday “to pursue other opportunities.”

Canova joined WGBH in 2011, not long after the station embarked on a major retooling with a focus on hard local news coverage with an infusion of voice and opinion.

Here’s the full memo obtained by Boston:

Good Morning:

I want you to know that Ted Canova will be leaving WGBH, effective this Thursday July 2nd, to pursue other opportunities.

Ted brought a great deal of experience and talent to the nearly four years he has been with us. I want to thank him for his many contributions and wish him only good things and the best of luck in the future.

A search to fill this critical position will begin immediately.

Redo talked up Canova’s work at WGBH in a statement to Boston:

Canova issued the following statement to Boston:

Plus we have made stronger and lasting connections in the community while also been recognized for high quality by winning national journalism awards including the Edward R. Murrow Award, New York Festivals and Clarions.
