John Oliver Wonders How Maine Gov. Paul LePage Got Elected

At times, Maine Gov. Paul LePage is larger than life.

A little over a week after vetoing a bill that would have increased access to the lifesaving overdose drug Narcan, the outspoken Republican and Donald Trump supporter adopted a dog and named it Veto—breaking the heart of the woman who reportedly planned to adopt that same dog. A couple days later, LePage declared that people from India are “the worst ones” to understand, along with Bulgarians.

So it was only a matter of time before Last Week Tonight host John Oliver took notice.

LePage was the subject of “People Who Somehow Got Elected,” which noted his record-setting number of vetoes—more than 400 and counting. The segment also compared LePage encouraging his state’s gun-owners to take up arms against the drug-dealers in a fit of vigilante justice to the plot of Charles Bronson’s 1985 film Death Wish 3. 

“You see, while most humans possess a thin barrier that stops thoughts from immediately exiting their brain as words, Paul LePage does not,” the narrator says.
