Simply Stylish Hand-Illustrated Goods From Light Rust Studio
Light Rust Studio may be fresh on the scene, but its burgeoning collection of hand-illustrated paper goods have proven instantly endearing and effortlessly charming—plain and simple.
Started just this past November by Brittany Armington, Light Rust Studio features her original, upbeat designs on quality, eco-friendly paper, including cards, prints, and calendars. Simplicity is key for Armington, whose whimsical works are are both fresh and understated, partly thanks to their monochromatic composition. Vivid color pairs beautifully with many of her seasonal designs, like the Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day cards, while others are perfectly suited for a simple black treatment, like the covetable kitchen utensil print tea towel and quote cards.
“I love being able to spend time drawing and getting my ideas down on paper,” Armington says. “It has been a joy to see everything come to life.”
Armington’s New England roots (she grew up in an 18th century Massachusetts farm house and spent summers in wooded New Hampshire) and recent travels shine through her work and continuously inspire. Her creative process, too, is effortless and organic. She ponders each new design for a time before putting it to paper in her North End studio.
“I don’t like to churn through a lot of drawings to flesh my ideas out. I’d rather let the concept live in my head for a bit and then come up with a small handful of sketches,” Armington said.
Her hand illustrations now adorn more than just the basic paper goods of Light Rust Studio’s first days, including decorative quotes on recycled wood stands and must-have tea towels. And that’s just the beginning for Armington, who is currently crafting a series of birthday cards and exploring other potential mediums for her simply stunning illustrations.
