This magical, hidden gem of a cottage was built in 1923 as a playhouse for the sole enjoyment of a little boy name Daniel Hamilton. Hamilton was son of a prominent family on the Cape, and the house was his source of mystery and wonder. It was also conveniently a short walk away from his own home across the street. About ten years after it was built, the house was expanded into a summer residence. Remnants of its playhouse days still exist today—there are stage curtains and a balcony in the main living room.
The whimsical abode, tucked behind trees along a tidal marsh, is filled with original handmade art. Its quirky design is visible in every corner, creating an inspiring environment for visitors like Walt Disney. Disney was friends with Technicolor inventor Herbert Kalmus (who lived down the street) and visited the playhouse in the ’30s. He lifted the Dutch front door’s curved design for Cinderella’s castle at Disneyland.
Cape Cod Home notes that the house is valuable even beyond its historic and artistic appeal—it’s also surrounded by nature. The cottage is barely visible from the marsh and still manages to offer stunning views of wildlife. In addition to the fairytale-like playhouse, the property boasts an artist’s studio, a dock, and a private boathouse.
