Often times, a Vermont getaway is the ideal plan for fueling creativity. Robert Frost, for instance, gleaned a great deal of inspiration from the landscapes of New England, and eventually became the poet laureate of the Green Mountain State. He purchased two properties in Concord, Vermont to escape the hay fever season of 1937, and a year later, moved to Boston. After that, he’d retreat to Concord from time to time until the properties were sold in the 1940s.
His former cottage near Shadow Lake is currently on the market for less than $140,000. The place—which may have been a haven for Frost’s poem writing—was built in 1801. It boasts original exposed beams, a double fireplace, a wood stove hearth, and a copper sink in the kitchen. A screened-in porch overlooks the one-acre lot, which includes a walnut tree, an apple tree, and plenty of lilacs. Today’s prospective cottage dwellers might enjoy the cape’s proximity to New Hampshire’s White Mountains.
