Here’s Your First Look at the 2017 Boston Flower & Garden Show

When he discovered the theme of this year’s Flower & Garden Show was “superheroes of the garden,” Brian Fairfield was stumped. The owner of Maine Stoneworks struggled to find a way to relate plants and gardens to a character like Superman—that is, until his daughters gave him an idea.
After reading them yet another Pixie Hollow book, which tell tales of Tinkerbell’s fairy neighborhood in Neverland, Fairfield realized Tinkerbell was a superhero in his daughters’ eyes. So, work commenced on a whimsical fairy house fit for Tinkerbell—if Tinkerbell was six feet tall.
“My goal was to make it look like a fairy house you’d find in the woods with all of the proper stonework,” says Fairfield of his display. He and more than a dozen other professional gardeners, landscapers, and horticulturalists loosely interpreted the superhero theme, resulting in a showstopping maze of colorful petals, plants, pathways, and fountains.
The Boston Flower & Garden Show has taken over the Seaport World Trade Center yet again this spring for an exhibition of all things leafy and aromatic. From March 22 through the 26, visitors can meander through the displays, attend workshops, and shop the garden marketplace.
The sweet-smelling show puts nature’s bounty on full display indoors. An installation by the Massachusetts Floral Coalition employed 3,500 carnations in a series of flower walls. Another by the team at Heimlich Nurseries incorporates thousands of flowers, which were grown in greenhouses over the winter and all forced to bloom during the week of the exhibition.
