Mindy Kaling Gave Architectural Digest a Tour of Her Newly Renovated Home
Cambridge native Mindy Kaling just spent 10 months renovating her Los Angeles home, and the finished product is what you might expect—an embodiment of her lively personality. Every room is splashed with color, making for a vibrant escape from the writers’ room.
The creator of The Mindy Project unveiled her newly redesigned abode to Architectural Digest this week, giving the design magazine a cheerful tour of the interior. Kaling hired designer Katie Ridder to dream up the home’s bold decor after she was drawn to the designer’s approach to color.
“When I was going through her Instagram, I felt like I already lived in that home; I could see myself living there for years,” Kaling tells AD.
Ridder indeed decked out the place in vivid hues. Aquas, teals, magentas, oranges, and shades of her favorite color, yellow, can be glimpsed in the walls, furniture, and art, as a video tour pans from room to room. Ridder injected personality into heirloom rosewood pieces, like Kaling’s childhood dining room set, by reupholstering its chairs with yellow leather.
“She wanted it to be happy. She wanted it to be warm,” Ridder tells AD. “You see the way she dresses on the show. She didn’t want bleached floors. She didn’t want everything whitewashed or stripped down. She wanted a lot of layering.”
Kaling’s favorite part of the house? The fireplace in her study, which is adorned with aqua blue tiles and framed by a large mirror. It’s topped with a striking nautical painting by artist Andy Dixon. All of the art in the house was handpicked by Kaling, like the two paintings in the entryway, done by her best friend from Cambridge, painter Julia Powell.
Kaling only recently bought her 1920s-era dream house, located in LA’s Hancock Park neighborhood. It turns out her home buying experience wasn’t unlike those had in Boston, as she entered into a few bidding wars.
“I fell in love with three houses, but I kept losing to these Chinese billionaires who were paying in all cash,” Kaling recounts to AD, adding she finally found a house that wasn’t listed, known as a pocket listing, and came in over asking price.
